The cuisine in the Dominican Republic is akin to the food of its neighbor countries of Haiti, Cuba and Puerto rico. There is also a smattering of African, Italian and Arab influences. The diverse cultural influences of its country folk are represented in their favorite dishes.
The most popular dish in the republic is called La Bandera Dominicana, which translates to “The Dominican Flag.” The food does not look like the flag, though. It is named this way because this dish, typically eaten during lunch time, is enjoyed by the people of the Dominican Republic regardless of age, race, or social status. I guess you could say that this is their national dish. This famous dish is made up of rice, meat and beans, and is usually served with a side dish of veggies.
There is also the Sancocho, which is a stew of tubers, meats, and vegetables slow cooked to perfection. The stew is usually served with slices of the avocado fruit, as well as steamed white rice. Another staple in their diet is fried plantains, which may also be served alongside the La Bandera.
Creole sauce is also popular in the Dominican Republic. This is a sauce made of vegetables which is used with meats. Also in style are garlic sauces and cream sauces. Dinner meals in the country are usually light fare such as fruit juices and a sandwich. When it comes to refreshments, the natives usually prefer tea flavored with ginger or lemongrass rather than coffee, and they also do enjoy the occasional cup of hot chocolate.
